Background of the Study
Local governments in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, play a critical role in managing urban waste amidst rapid population growth and increasing waste generation. The effectiveness of waste management systems is directly linked to the capacity of local government institutions to design, implement, and monitor sanitation policies (Etim, 2023). In Uyo, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited funding, and poor coordination among stakeholders have resulted in inefficient waste collection and disposal practices (Obong, 2024). These inefficiencies not only harm the environment but also pose significant public health risks. Recent studies underscore the importance of strong local governance in ensuring effective waste management, highlighting innovative practices such as community-based recycling programs and public-private partnerships (Ibe, 2025). This study examines the role of local governments in waste management in Uyo, focusing on institutional performance, stakeholder collaboration, and the socio-economic impacts of improved sanitation services. The objective is to provide actionable insights for enhancing waste management practices and promoting sustainable urban living.
Statement of the Problem
Local governments in Uyo face considerable challenges in managing urban waste effectively. Inadequate infrastructure, funding constraints, and poor stakeholder coordination result in inefficient waste collection and disposal, contributing to environmental degradation and public health concerns (Okon, 2024). These issues undermine community well-being and hinder sustainable urban development. This study aims to assess the role of local government in waste management, identify key operational challenges, and propose measures to enhance efficiency and stakeholder collaboration in the sector.
Objectives of the Study:
• To evaluate the performance of local government in managing urban waste.
• To identify operational challenges affecting waste management efficiency.
• To propose strategies for improving waste management practices and stakeholder collaboration.
Research Questions:
• How effective are local governments in managing waste in Uyo?
• What are the primary challenges hindering efficient waste management?
• What measures can improve local government waste management performance?
Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Effective local government intervention significantly improves waste management outcomes.
• H2: Inadequate infrastructure negatively affects waste management efficiency.
• H3: Enhanced stakeholder collaboration leads to better waste management practices.
Significance of the Study
This study is crucial for assessing the role of local governments in waste management and identifying strategies to improve service delivery in Uyo. Its findings will assist policymakers and stakeholders in formulating effective waste management policies, thereby enhancing environmental quality and public health (Etim, 2023; Obong, 2025). The recommendations aim to support sustainable urban development and improved community well-being.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating the role of local governments in waste management in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. It focuses exclusively on waste collection, disposal practices, and stakeholder coordination, excluding private sector waste initiatives. Data are drawn solely from local government records and community surveys.
Definitions of Terms:
• Waste Management: The systematic collection, transportation, and disposal of waste materials.
• Local Government: Administrative bodies responsible for local-level public services.
• Sustainable Urban Development: Planning and development practices that promote long-term environmental, economic, and social well-being.
